would you ever rent a dress?

My closet is home to a few pricey numbers that have had the privilege of leaving the closet once or maybe twice.  Back in the day (when I apparently had money to burn) if a special event was approaching I would head to Holts with my Gucci bag in tow and come away with a dress or a top or a... you get the picture.  Then that special number would go out on the town with me for one night and then it would get retired.  I have gone back and thought maybe I could do a re-wear... a couple of years later... only to find that said dress was now embarrassingly out of style.  I didn't do this all the time.  I mean there is a gap dress hidden in there too.  But I did it and while it was lovely at the time it just isn't going to happen now.

So a couple of months ago I stumbled on a blog (yeah I wish I could remember which one) where the blogger had posted a bunch of pics of herself in a bunch of lovely dresses and while reading through I learned that she didn't own these dresses... she'd rented them.  So I clicked on through to the site and of course didn't pass go because I live in Canada... and don't have that damn zip code.  So I turned to google and found that there is a company here in Canada that does the same (rent frock repeat).  So now I am not so patiently waiting for them to post new fall/winter 2012 dresses and hoping that there is something that comes in that speaks to my former... I mean still existing yet buried... love for all things dresses.

Would you rent a dress... have you rented a dress... how did that turn out?

  1. I swear I just had this conversation...with myself! How is it that I can justify spending $300+ on a dress that I will wear ONCE, but I cannot justify spending that much on, say, a pair of fall boots that I will wear all season... and likely into next season! I was looking at some of those rent-a-dress websites for the wedding I had in Sept., but didn't find anything that stood out. I was also limited by color then, though. I think it could be a good option!!

    1. yes I don't get why dresses seem so much more justifiable... although I've also forked out a lot of dough for boots... you wear them everyday woman... get yourself a nice pair and you will be happy every day in the winter!

  2. I would love to rent a dress for a special occasion! I think it would be completely worth it. But I'm a size xxs petite, so it might all be just a dream for me.

    1. wow that would be hard. i am normally an xs and find sometimes even that doesn't cut it but an xxs and petit... you must have a good tailor!

  3. Never had rented one, but wouldn't be against it! But I think one of the hardest parts about dress shopping is finding one that looks good on you so how do they do that?

    1. true. good question. no idea! they do send you two sizes of the dress you pick though so hopefully it fits... but fitting and looking good are definitely two different things.

  4. I agree - wouldn't be against it! That's great they send 2 sizes, and it's so true that it's "easy" to spend a lot of money on a one-time-wear-dress. Push come to shove, you could go with separates - buy a great pencil skirt or something and dress it up with accessories and / or a new top (typically cheaper than a new dress...right? )

    1. true that separates would be cheaper but i just never feel as fancy in a skirt!
